In the beginning stages of creating an animal art piece that represented me, I thought about different components like how I should incorporate surrealism into it, and what animal represents me. I was born in the year of the snake and always looked at the snake as representing healing opportunities, change, important transitions, and increased energy. At first, I looked for inspiration online and found a coiled up snake image that I found interesting and surreal because it continued looping and then went off the page, like you didn’t know when it ended. Next, I created a rough sketch and cleaned it up to show the basic outline of my final piece. Then, I thought about the background and decided that I wanted to shade using an ombre effect with chalk pastels. Then, I thought about a snake’s scales and how I wanted to add that element into the drawing. I drew the scales using a ruler and used kind of a graph paper pattern technique. Finally, I decided I wanted a pop of color and partially filled in the scales with neon sharpies to create an asymmetrical unbalance.
